Detroit Electric SP:01

Hang on! That’s a Lotus Elise you might want to say…

And you wouldn’t even be wrong.

This is an all electric car based on the Elise’s body. It comes from a company that built electric cars already at the beginning of the 20th century. It is lightweight and therefore quick. But unfortunately also very expensive.

But this is electric motoring how it should be done to gain public interest

Another one of these nice boxy American cars…

Just love them. This blog gets me onto new territory. Finally I can learn something about how many models are there of my favourite American car shape. 🙂

win-win…

’66 Chevrolet Impala SS L27

When it comes to American cars in my opinion there is no better period than the late 60s and early 70s. Cars could not get much longer and wider really. But this is certainly the period with the best proportioned silhouettes.

No wonder that these heavy monsters handled rather badly compared to European models, but then again the Americans found a way around that. Just add power… Lots of it…

This one here is like a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Looks like a family saloon but has the engine that was usually reserved for the Corvette only, producing 400 and something horsepower… 🙂

You will want to make the guy at the petrol station your best friend or have a garage where you can just store the car…

It is beautiful though and if I ever come to the point driving an American car it would have to be something like the Impala…

Wonder why that idea never really was followed for mass production…?? 😉

interesting concept though and I would love to see what this technology would look like today…

Isn’t it beautiful? Is it even better than the original?

It certainly is cheaper as you’ll see in this recent ad.

Performs absolutely fantastic but is also very thirsty. But isn’t it beautiful?

Meyers Manxter 2+2

Not its natural habitat, but that is exactly why I had to show this picture…

Always loved the beach buggies since I used to own a Matchbox version as a boy. And then please remember the legendary scene from “The Thomas Crown Affair”… THAT was what finally got me for that car…

Now at Meyers, the legend in beach buggies, they offer a reasonably priced kit for a family buggy. This is the car I currently want. It is following the exact philosophy of the original car. But with 4 seats!

Now that would be the perfect motor for our annual holiday in the Polish forest… 🙂

’56 Ford F 100 Pick Up Truck

This could have earned me lots of money in the 90’s…

It happened that because of a relationship I travelled South America a bit in the early 90’s, particularly Chile. And the streets were full of these old pick up trucks… And there it was the idea… Europeans go crazy for old pick ups, Chileans give them for cheap money towards a new one…

Problem is, you have to be there yourself to do the buying. If as a foreigner you want to make business with an average Chilean guy, they do not think further than the next day and hence try to rip you off. Meaning instead of looking for a regular small income, they prefer to sell the car more expensive than they bought it from a farmer, just for the quick profit… and killing the business before it even kicked off properly.

How I got this opinion? Experience. On my first journey with my then-girlfriend and her mother we did not have a car and wanted to visit some monument site  which was about 1km off the main road. We were lucky and found a farmer on his tractor. He agreed for a few pesos to get us there and pick us up again two hours later to receive the same amount again.

He did not turn up again and we walked back to the main road. the farmer obviously preferred to have a few quick drinks with some colleagues instead of having even more drinks later with our additional money. As I said. Quick profit…

Well… have I said anything about the car yet? Not much needed. I personally think that the pick up trucks are the  prettiest of all the 1950’s cars. Expect to see more of them throughout the year… 🙂

Dodge Charger R/T

The bad guys’ car in my all-time favourite movie “Bullitt” which featured a car chase that sets very high standards even for today…

I can hardly imagine that anybody does not know the movie, but for those who don’t, the movie was made in 1968 and actually manifested Steve McQueen as the king of cool. Knowing of the time the film was made, makes the car chase even more impressive. No CGI or anything like that was used. All proper driving and stunt work, add a bit of good editing and you actually have won an Academy Award (aka Oskar) for the movie.

One of the stunt drivers was even playing on of the bad guys, while Steve McQueen drove many of his scenes himself, only handing the car to a stunt driver when his character could not be seen in the scene. It is all written up nicely in one of the wikipedia articles.

Head over to youtube and have a look at the car chase with the volume turned up, as the noises are quite impressive too. Not to mention the cool soundtrack by Lalo Schifrin…

So did I say anything about cars in this article? Only this much: I believe they could not have chosen the baddy car any better than this one!
